RANKING LADDER aka "How To"

 

First of three games starts at 7:15. If must late or must leave early; casual play is always welcome.

The goal of the playing environment is to replicate US Chess tournament conditions...and keep it fun! 

 

OBJECT

Advance position on Ranking Ladder by winning games versus higher ranked player.

Retain position on Ranking Ladder by winning games versus lower ranked player.

 

Win two (2) of three (3) Club Ladder games at one club meeting.

Win by a higher-ranked player, no change in position on the ladder

Win by a lower-ranked player; position advanced on the ladder

(inactive players drop positions over time)

 

CHESS CLOCK IS REQUIRED FOR ALL RANKING LADDER GAMES (or chess clock app on phone)

 

NOTE the three (3) ways to lose any chess game.

1. CHECKMATE -OR- 2. RESIGNATION -OR- 3. TIME EXPIRES

PLAYERS ARE PAIRED with an opponent of similar position on Ranking Ladder

 

TIME CONTROL: Set the game timer to G/15 d5 (a 30-minute game / 15m per player w/5s delay before the clock starts)

     ○ Note, when all 3 Ranking Ladder games end, turn in results recorded on index index card

● Set up your pieces (see color assignments below)

● Shake hands at the start and end of each game

● Wait for “start your clocks” (7:15 p.m.) and begin play.

● RAISE your hand for any assistance anytime. (if during game, first pause clock)

NOTE, 2 players may agree to play time control G/30 d3 for two (2) games. prior to start. 

 

PIECE COLORS FOR EACH (G) GAME

● G1 - BLACK - higher-ranked player

● G2 - WHITE - higher-ranked player

● G3 - RANDOM color

 

RECORD RESULTS

● Recorded on one (1) index card

● Results of each the three (3) games

 

WHO RECORDS RESULTS

● RECORDED BY

     ○ The higher-ranked player 

● ENSURE INDEX CARD INCLUDES

     ○ NAMES (of both players)

     ○ RESULTS of all games 

               W for Win = 1.0 point

               D for Draw = 1/2 (or 0.5) point 

               L for Loss = 0.0 point

 

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER ALL 3 GAMES COMPLETE

● TURN IN RESULTS to be calculated for next week’s Ranking Ladder.

● After results are turned in; players reset the board and may

     1. analysis of games(s)

     2. mentor another player(s)

     3. play a casual-social game(s) (which do not count toward Ranking Ladder, but do help your “chess IQ”)

● QUIETLY - analyze, mentor, or play quietly while other games are in progress.
