HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT ON ANY THURSDAY

 

 

  • EVERY THURSDAY IS CHESS DAY - with a club of likeminded winners and learners.

    • Greater Greenwood Chess Players Club is US Chess Affiliate # A6030645  - https://new.uschess.org/ 
    • Serving Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda, Laurens, and Newberry counties. 

       

    • Chess equipment is provided, no membership dues and all organized game results are rated.    

    • Social-Hobby-Casual and Organized play for all experience, and skill levels. Family-friendly, so bring a friend.

    • Casual and 'warm up' games from 6 pm until 6:45 pm. Casual and 'wind down' games from about 9 pm until 10 pm.
    • Organized play from 7 pm until about 9 pm. All organized events are about 2 hours in duration.

 

    • All are welcome any time. 'Chess doors' open from 6 pm until 10 pm. 'Drop-In' or to 'Stay-n-Play'.

    • Holidays, may impact the exact Thursday event of a month. The following is the standard schedule of events. Text Questions to 864-389-1180.

FASTER GAMES for improving board vision, intuition and clock management.

  • 2nd THURSDAY - QUAD (rated event) Free - R3 G20 / d3 (3 rounds, time control 20 minutes with 3 second delay).  
  • 3rd THURSDAY - SWISS BLITZ Tournament (rated event) Free - R6 G5 / +5 (6 rounds, time control 5 minutes with increment of 5 seconds). 

  • 4th THURSDAY QUAD (rated event) Free - R3 G20 / d3 (3 rounds, time control 20 minutes with 3 second delay). 

 

 USCF TOURNAMENT for a true national rating to compete anywhere.

  • 5th THURSDAY - SWISS - LAKELANDS US CHESS TOURNAMENT (a USCF-sanctioned event) R4 G30 / d5 (4 rounds, time control 30 minutes with 5 second delay).

 

A quad  is a round-robin format pairing players of similar strength. 4-players play each other once or in a double-round-robin, play each other twice with a different color.

A Swiss is a format which pairs players of similar score each round ensuring completive matches. There is no elimination.

 

SLOWER GAMES for more thinking and calculating time.

  • 2nd, 3rd, 4th THURSDAYS - SWISS - Free R6 G45 / +5 (6 rounds, time control 45 minutes with 5 second increment).

    • 1 round played each of 6 Thursdays (register once, then 1/2 point byes are available, when you absolutely can not be there / withdraw and re-enter any time)  

 

OUR GRAND PRIX IS THE ONE NOT TO MISS for prizes for each 3-month season and the yearly club championships.

 

  • 1st  THURSDAY GRAND PRIX Tournament (a rated event) - $5.00 EF (entry fee) - R3 G15 / +10  (3 rounds, time control 15 minutes with increment of 10 seconds) cash only onsite or pay online a registration "check out". All proceeds help with club expenses, equipment, events, prizes and growing chess locally.

 

  • Format is 4-player quad and, depending on number of players, a (3 round) small Swiss is possible.  

  • THIS IS THE ONE THURSDAY NOT TO MISS FOR THE BEST COMPETETION AND PRIZES!

    • Birthday Gift. When you play the Grand Prix during your birthday month, you are 'gifted' 3 GP Points and no entry fee.

    • Wins are worth more each month of a 3-month season.

      • Month 1 win = 1 point / Month 2 win = 2 points / Month 3 win = 3 points to help 'catch up' when you can't always make it to club.  

 

    • WHAT IS A GRAND PRIX? In short, games won earn points which accumulate over a period of time to earn fame and fortune!!

      • Earn points for each game won during a Grand Prix 1st Thursday. (win = 1 point and loss = 0 point and draw = 1/2 point)

      • Accumulate points during each 3-month season (winter-spring-summer-fall).

        • 3-month season prizes: ribbon-medal-cash for 1st-2nd-3rd to take home

      • Points accumulate during the calendar year. 36 points possible in a calendar year.  

        • 12-month prizes: BIG trophies for 1st-2nd-3rd place to take home

          • 1st place is crowned CLUB CHAMPION 

            • Name engraved on Greenwood Chess Perpetual Trophy on permanent display where we play
